General Description:

The Business Development Manager - is a key sales position that provides strategic input and tactical execution to drive sales across international and automotive markets, but also outdoor and sport channels. This includes sales across the portfolio of brands – Whispbar, Yakima and Prorack in markets such as Europe, Canada, North America, South America, Mexico, Asia, and others per the strategic plan.  This position manages Key Account relationships, develops profitable sales programs, and promotional strategies for existing and new distributors and dealers.  The Business Development Manager is the internal expert on the unique product, marketing and service needs for these channels. In addition, this position develops new customer relationships, negotiates annual programs, and maintains internal communications and follow-up.  The Business Development Manager will partner with Regional Business Units (RBU’s) to complement and drive global expansion efforts in alignment with regional plans and resources.

The Business Development Manager will play an important role as a member of the business development team and overall sales organization.  This includes, but is not limited to, cross-functional collaboration with Brand, Marketing, Product, Quality, and Supply Chain Teams to drive and support growth strategies across global automotive channels.

Other key aspects of this position will focus on contributions to achieving and sustaining the Yakima Strategic Business Plan, AOP and Key Initiatives. 

Scope & Responsibilities:

  • Manager and primary point of contact for dealers and distributors in international and automotive sales channels
  • Provides input and drives execution of annual go to market territory plans for specific global regions and markets, including distributors, business partners and/or key customers
  • Drives profitable growth opportunities as set forth in the Strategic Business Plan, AOP and Key Initiatives
  • Partners with teams in customer service and supply chain to ensure flawless delivery and execution of customer’s needs
  • Provides market based feedback to aid Brand and Marketing in development of packaging, promotions, pricing and other critical selling materials required for profitable global growth
  • Observes and communicates “voice of customer” into the team and helps drive cross-functional success

Specific Duties:

  • Maintains regular sales contacts with each key customer and distribution business partner, including periodic market visits
  • Identifies profitable growth opportunities based upon market feedback and according to Strategic Business Plan and AOP priorities
  • Achieves sales operational objectives by preparing and completing action plans; resolving problems; identifying trends; and delivering sales results
  • Observes and contributes to complete team understanding of business partnership needs including, but not limited to, variances in culture, competitive landscapes, automotive requirements, trends, certifications, trade laws and legal issues pertaining to all customers
  • Meets financial sales objectives by contributing to forecasting requirements, operating within an annual budget, and communicating expenditure timing
  • Contributes to monthly/quarterly/annual category analysis of international and automotive channels, including share development, retail space development, and brand/promotional activities
  • Monitors and utilizes data from categorical analysis and competitive landscapes
  • Executes sales of all products and new items, promotions and other sales initiatives to appropriate distribution business partner and/or Key Customers
  • Contributes to identification of opportunities for profitable growth through organic expansion with existing customers and opening new partners across channels of distribution
  • Provides input to development of new product lines by identifying new product opportunities, new packaging solutions and training needs based upon consumer demand and trends
  • Participates in new and creative strategic sales programs and sell through activities to optimize profitable growth
  • Participates and contributes within technical seminars, sales meetings, trade shows and other events as appropriate
  • Regularly documents and reports overview of market situation including performance of channel vs. plan and contributing factors (both positive and challenges)
  • Works cross functionally to balance the needs and wants of both the functional areas and the growth needs and opportunities with our customers
  • Remains well informed and connected on products, applications, technical service, training and market conditions
  • Delivers in an effective and efficient manner other duties, responsibilities, and projects as may be assigned


  • B.S. or B.A. degree from an accredited college/university in Business or related field required
  • 5+ years of sales experience required, automotive industry experience strongly preferred
  • Strong analytical & computer skills; Excel & PowerPoint are a MUST
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills
  • 3+ years experience working internationally and across various cultures
  • Ability to interact with both external and internal customers at all levels
  • Detail oriented with strong aptitude for problem solving
  • Exceptional abilities to use financial data to make decisions and maximize account profitability
  • Strong decision-making and organizational skills
  • Able to work independently and exercise good judgment
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record
  • Bilingual ability with Spanish or Chinese (Mandarin) fluency a plus
  • Valid passport and ability to travel within the United States as well as to international locales ranging from Asia and South America to the United States, Canada, and Europe

Physical Requirements:

  • Travel  (domestic and international) – Approximately 50% of time
  • Able to sit and work at a computer keyboard for extended periods of time
  • Able to stoop, kneel, bend at the waist and reach on a daily basis
  • Able to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally
  • Must have corrected vision to 20/30
  • Must be able to travel internationally via commercial carrier
  • Must be able to work weekends as required
