Proprietary Cradle Design Facilitates Easier Bike Loading with Mast Mounts; Tray Mounts’ Reduced Size and Weight Enable Easier Rear of Vehicle AccessBEAVERTON, Ore. (September 1, 2007)- Yakima, an innovator in vehicle racks for boats, bikes, winter sports gear, and cargo boxes, is unveiling a completely revamped line of hitch mounts for spring ’08 with lightweight, consumer-friendly and versatile features, accommodating bikes of all sizes. The SwingDaddy and FlipSide, mast-style hitch mounts, feature a proprietary sliding cradle for easier bike loading and enhanced bike protection. The DoubleDown 2, 4, 5 are Yakima’s most versatile mounts, accommodating up to five bikes. Tray mounts, the HoldUp and StickUp, boast a lighter weight and a more compact solution that make loading and unloading possible in 10 seconds or less. Products will be at retail beginning January 2008.
“Yakima’s premium design language significantly enhances the appearance and performance of our hitch mounts,” said David Fee, senior director of market and product development for Yakima. “We made significant improvements in design aesthetics, ease of use, bike protection and stability, and vehicle access. These combined improvements streamline the loading and unloading process, critical to our consumers who want to hit the road or trail quickly. We’ve made it faster and easier.”
Mast Hitch Mounts
All three mounts include arms that are closer together accommodating more frame shapes than current mounts and bottle openers for post-ride celebrations.
The new hitch tongue, RocSteady™, provides greater security and stability while the user-friendly TriggerFinger™ facilitates the easy folding down of the mast and arms for a compact solution when not in use. LockDown™ is a new security system with a cable locking all four bikes versus previous mounts that locked the outside bike only. The cable is stowed in the rear of the mast when not in use for improved storage.
The SwingDaddy, the premium style of the line designed especially for families or large groups, carries up to four bikes of any size fitting two inch hitches out of the box. The mount offers optimal arm padding made of EVA foam and enhanced cradle adjustability for superior bike protection. The SwingDaddy’s mast swings to the side when fully loaded, utilizing SwingAway™ technology for rear of car access. The arm folds down for easy vehicle parking or storage when not in use. MSRP: $439.00.
For the first time, the FlipSide offers a 90-degree tilt (left or right) providing more options for access at the rear of the vehicle as well as better rear view visibility when not in use. The mount features Yakima’s optimal arm padding. Like the SwingDaddy, the FlipSide has the proprietary sliding cradle system for quicker, easier loading and fits 1 ¼” and two inch hitches out of the box. MSRP: $339.00.
DoubleDown 2, 4 and 5
The DoubleDown 2, 4, 5 is the replacement for the popular KingPin, but offers the two-bike option vs. the three. The DoubleDown 5 is the largest bike mount that Yakima offers, holding five bikes. User-friendly triggers easily fold down the mast and arms for rear of car access. MSRP: (2) $199.00; (4) $229.00; (5) $259.00.
The overall reduced size and lighter weight allows consumers to easily load bikes and access the rear of the vehicle. A new design offers versatility to fit the widest range of bikes from down hillers to BMX to road. Similar to the hitch mast products, these new tray mounts also feature the RocSteady™ hitch tongue providing greater security and stability. Both mounts have the StrongArm™ retainer for enhanced bike protection that allows for optimal loading speeds of 10 seconds or less.

A premium mount carrying up to four bikes (with the plus-two add on) the HoldUp has excellent rear wheel strap adjustability to fit any bike size and is compatible with two inch hitches out of the box. A slightly longer wheel tray now also fits extra long bikes like the Electra Townie. A user-friendly trigger folds down the tray for easier rear of car access and the mast folds up and within itself for a more compact solution when not in use. For the first time, this mount style is security-enabled with Yakima’s LockDown™ cable system. MSRP: $399.00.
A value option, the StickUp carries two bikes fitting 1 ¼” and two inch hitches out of the box. Independent adjustability on each tray allows consumers to secure bikes of any height or length. A user-friendly spring-loaded pin easily folds down the mount for rear of car access and folds up and within itself when not in use. MSRP: $269.00.
Fork Mount Adapters
For consumer convenience, Yakima developed fork mount adapters to fit Cannondale, Maverick and Specialized bicycles. These adapters work with the following types of thru-axles: 20mm, 24mm, 25mm, and QR20, Lefty or Disc-brakes. Yakima fork adapters provide consumer stability and integration with current rack systems.
“Our thru-axle adapters round out our product offerings for core cycling customers,” said Eric Roesinger, category business manager for Yakima. “In this case, consumers don’t have to purchase a brand new mount just to carry thru-axle bikes. We are making Yakima a one-stop shop to fulfill all bicycle-specific vehicle rack needs.”
