Not everything I needed it to be
Review by Alexei Posted on July 1, 2019First off, this is an easy rack to use, it seems solid. A couple times I didn't put the arm right next to the fork of my bike and it actually moved, but didn't fall out because the back tire was secure. I read that you shouldn't put it right next to the fork, this has to be incorrect information. ...read more
Issues: It's extremely heavy, installing and uninstalling it is pretty difficult for me. The lock is basically useless, maybe it is long enough for a road bike, but not for a small mountain bike. I have a 4Runner, just like the one in the product examples, and the pivot feature doesn't pivot down enough to open my back door. Since I need access to the back of my car all the time, this is the most annoying part of the rack. I have had this for a year, and use it a few times a week. I'm a little surprised by how much the plastic has faded in the year that I have had it. It is wobbly, I got a U-bolt to help this, but the wobbles aren't coming from the hitch itself.
Good rack, could easily be great with a few minor adjustments.
Perfect for shuttle rips and long hauls
Review by Dan Posted on December 11, 2018I've used this on many many shuttle runs and lots of long across country trips! Always works great. Easy to use and simple for everyone that needs to use it.
Holdup and Plus 2
Review by John Posted on May 6, 2018WOW, finally dropped the cash to move to a hitch mount bike tray system, what an improvement in our biking experience as a family! Prior to the Yakima Holdup, I would fight with attempting to get four bikes of various sizes onto the old rack, which ultimately resulted in Dad not wanting to take the family biking or lots of cursing, or both. The Holdup, once adjusted for your family of bikes, makes leaving for the trailhead a non-issue. And I don't have to embarrass myself at the trailhead trying to get four bikes back onto something that barely fits three. Also, the built in locking systems means if we want to stop for street tacos afterwards, I don't worry about our bikes leaving with a new owner. Love this rack, easy to use, secures the bikes great, both for travel and against theft. We have already ridden more this season as a family than any prior season. Thanks Yakima!
Great Rack but Noisy
Review by Tyler Posted on January 17, 2018This rack works flawlessly and easily! It's great having a rack that requires no adjustments between different bikes with different wheel sizes since I always alternate between a dirtjumper, a large trail bike, and a road bike plus all my girlfriends' bikes. I feel way more confident with this rack ...read morethan I do putting a bike on top of the car, plus, you don't get the bugs that get stuck to your bike like you can on a roof rack. My girlfriend loves how much easier and faster it is to load, whereas she used to never load the roof rack by herself, she has no problem with this guy! My only complaint is the rack gets noisy, especially when you leave it on the car with no bikes, in the vertical "up" position. The rattle-free threaded screw seems to do the trick at the actual hitch, but the rack itself moves back and forth at the hinge when put vertically, unloaded. This makes it sound like your car and/or the rack is falling apart. It would be really nice if Yakima came up with some sort of anti-rattle system for the hinge when the rack is in the "up" position. Regardless, I would buy another Holdup before I'd buy any roof rack again!
Awesome Product, Great Service!!
Review by Justin Posted on January 16, 2018I really like this product, it looks sharp and does its job well. when it arrived it had a broken end cap but i emailed the company and they quickly responded and resolved the issue. i give it four stars on the price becasue realative to other racks its good priced but it's still just so expensive. ...read morebut all in all its a good product with great service! Yakima service has been awesome over the years and why ive only owned these racks for 20 plus years. any issues ive had the service dept has taken care of until it was right and I was 100% satisfied. I have to laugh when I read some of the complaints about the rack being heavy,ok maybe with 2 downhill bikes its harder to fold it down to get into the hatchback(maybe hit the gym)but this rack has been nothing but awesome and I cant wait to have my second holdup on the back of my suv!
Could be great
Review by Hlsj Posted on September 22, 2017The rack works well, but it has a few problems.
The fold-down pivot is hard to operate. The locking pin is likewise hard to operate without lifting the rack to take the load off of the pin. The rack is heavy!
The caps fall off to reveal that the inside of the tubing is rusting. The All...read moreen-head bolts that secure the rails to the rest of the rack rust easily, and are unsightly.
The lock cores/locks are of poor quality and eventually jammed, requiring us to cut the cable, and the retraction method for the cables doesn't work very well, neither does the lock core snap storage - it is hard to use.
This could be a great rack if the details were well thought out and executed. I have been a fan of Yakima for decades, and I am disjointed in this rack. Our rack is about 4 years old, and although these issues showed up immediately, they may have been rectified since.
Hold Up and +2 Adapter
Review by KTJ Posted on August 11, 2017I had been using roof bike racks for years but recently got a new and heavier bike (Trek Fuel EX8 29") and I wanted a quality rack that would protect my investment and not require the yoga and cross-fit workout necessary to get our bikes on top of my 4-runner. After substantial research I deci...read moreded on the Hold Up because it had the +2 adapter so that we could take all out bikes on trips. There are not many high quality hitch mounted tray racks that can hold up to 4 bikes and the Hold-up and 2+ seemed to be best aligned with our needs. I purchased the hold-up in April 2017 and the +2 in July 2017.
Pros: As expected from Yakima, the Hold-up is well constructed and sturdy, it was reasonably easy to assemble and install, and it is easy to fold up for storage when not loaded. I can quickly and easily put several bikes on and take bikes off the rack without removing any tires, adjusting seats, etc. The trays are easy to adjust to get multiple bikes to fit without much work which is great. The videos for assembly and installation were very helpful. Overall, after four months of regular use, I am happy with the Hold-up and 2+ adapter.
Cons: It is a stretch to open the rear of my 2014 Toyota 4-runner with the rack loaded, even when it is tilted toward the ground, and with the +2 fully loaded it is quite heavy to tilt and get back into position (not bad with only 2 bikes without the 2+). There are only 3 of us in our family and even when I do not load a bike on the tray closest to the vehicle I cannot get the rear door opened without tilting the rack. Others had reported this previously in reviews I found when I was researching rack options, so I went into the purchase anticipating this might be an issue and I was OK with that. I can still access the rear by putting the back window down if needed. Following the manufacturers recommendations the rack secures and holds all of our 26" bikes snugly on trips hundreds of miles long, but I have had some trouble securing my 2017 Trek Fuel EX 29". I have found that I must position the swing arm almost near the center of the front axel so that my bike does not shift while driving. Positioning it 1-2" from the fork as recommended by Yakima works well with the 26" bikes but not with my 29er. The built in locks and security system are nice features but the cords are not long enough for my 29er either. It would be nice if you could get an extension. I am also not sure how well the rack would work with fat bikes or 27"+ tires so I would recommend checking that out if this is a requirement.
Despite these issues, to date I am quite happy with the hold-up and +2 adapter that allows us to carry up to 4 bikes on the back of our 4-runner. Works well with 26" bikes and with my 29er with some experimenting and minor adjustments. For the most part it has the features we were looking for but there are some trade offs that I can live with.
Review by dj Posted on July 28, 2017I've had the Holdup for about a month. This is a really great product. Getting bikes on/off is so fast and easy and the bikes are locked in solid. I appreciate that nothing contacts the bike frames too. The rack itself is solid with very little play so the bikes don't shake around either.
...read more /> It's not the lightest rack to get on/off the vehicle, but I'm OK with that. I also can't open my Jeep Wrangler tail gate all the way even with the unit tipped down. I do have over sized tires so that's just the way it is; the spare hits it.
Overall, I'm pleased with the purchase, would buy it again, and can easily recommend the product.
And, if you ever have to contact the sales/support team at Yakima they are outstanding!
Review by chrissie Posted on July 1, 2017Install took a clamp. No problem. Love the ease of use. locks in great, easy to open tailgate. Definitely a great product and purchase.
