I bought for my family of fives vacations. I drive an 08 Ford Expedition. No problems with the hatch. No effect of mpg. I've pulled 90 mph with the box on top with no issues. No rattles no nothing. This thing is a tank. I got a great price at dicks and a 10% off coupon to boot. It's so much nicer being able to see out the back window on trips and leaves the kids room to stretch. I've put two adult suitcases, box of diapers, ports crib, three kids suitcases, and various pillows, blankets, and other traveling necessities. Those of you with small children know you need it all but the kitchen sink and might consider bringing that.

We bought the Skybox Pro 18 after several months of shopping. We cubed out on our camping trips this past summer and needed more room. We ultimately chose the Skybox Pro 18 for four main reason: 1) the reputation/reviews for Yakima; 2) styling (function vice form); 3) the locking mechanisms to install it on your car; and 4) the price. A note on the price; we got it on sale at REI and that put the nail in the coffin on the selection.

The box is solid construction and no issues so far after about three months of use. I like the latches on the Yakima. They seemed more sturdy than those on the Thule and, reading other reviews out there, I think other concur. The box has plenty of room for my 180+cm skis. It is shorter than other boxes out there, but I knew that going it. It is great for things I don't want in the car like wet skis, camp stove fuel cans, tents, food, etc. New buyers need to consider what they plan on putting in there before purchase (goes for all boxes).

I own a 2011 Outback. There were a lot of concerns out there on whether a size 18 box of any make would work. I saw a lot of mixed comments from other Outback users on whether a size 18 would fit. The consensus was that Thules wouldn't allow you open your hatch whereas Yakima would due to the angled back part of the box. I'm happy to report that the Skybox Pro 18 fits my Subaru Outback and I can open my hatch with no issues and not touching of the hatch and box. I did have to install it to the very max forward position. Also, it installed with no issue on the factory roof rack cross bars. Note, you will need two people to safely lift this box onto the top of the car without danger of scratching your paint. It is more awkward due to the length than the weight.

So far, we haven't noticed a large impact on fuel economy. Getting a lower profile box was a key selection criteria to minimize gas impacts. So far, we lose about 1-2 mpgs with the box attached depending on the speed.

Overall, great box. I gave it four starts instead of five as very little in life is perfect. I'd like to see the top reinforced just a tad more to make it stiffer. Petty nitpick item, however. I'd recommend its purchase to those looking for a long/narrow profile box. While pricey, it a great box that will serve you well.
